Abstract

Cigarette smoke can decrease air quality that affects human health. To create a smoke-free environment, it is important to have a system that can be used to detect the presence of hazardous gases in cigarette smoke. In this paper, we design and implement a wireless cigarette smoke detection system. The hardware utilises Arduino and four gas sensors, namely MQ-135, MQ-2, MQ-7 and MQ-9 to sense, collect, and send data wirelessly to Raspberry Pi using an ESP8266 ESP-01 Wi-Fi module. In the software side, we develop three programs, i.e. for Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and the web server. We show in real experiments that our system successfully gathers sensor readings from the gas sensors, sends data via wireless connection and stores it in the web server. © 2019 IEEE.
