A heuristic approach for school bus routing problem with transfer-hub station

Abstract

In this research we handle a school bus routing problem with fixed pick-up and drop-off points covering both the rural and suburban area. It is widely known as a kind of combinatorial optimization problem and usually modeled with multiple objectives. In this paper, we suggest a simple heuristic approach to quickly solve the problem by introducing a transfer-hub station that separates the pick-up and drop-off phase. We formulate our objective to minimize total travel time of all students at all bus stops while restricting the number of buses utilized. By applying our approach to the case of Manado, North Sulawesi, Indonesia, we can obtain an enhanced schedule that reduces students' travel time together with bus travel time compared with the previous schedule. This schedule also brings down the service cost of school buses while less suffering from the city's traffic congestion problem. © 2013 ISSN 1881-803X.
